Well, certainly not unexpectedly, the water chestnuts, discovered last year in our lake, have begun to sprout. A member reported being on the lake in his kayak and spotting quite a few patches at the far end of the lake and along the shoreline from the boat launch going towards the far end. The leaves, while still small are clearly identifiable with their scalloped borders. "As the shoots are still young, I found that the connection to the leaves broke with what I had not thought was a lot of tugging. The technique which seemed to be most efficient in lifting up the entire growth all the way to and including the chestnut itself was simply reaching down about a foot to grasp a slightly thicker portion of the tendril and then, rather than tugging, just allow the boat to drift - the slower movement allows for the chestnut to easily lose its grip on the silt at the bottom and the whole plant can be retrieved." (A central water chestnut debris drop-off site is being considered - announcement to membership to follow.)
